About the Carolina Junior Development Institute

The Carolina Junior Development Institute was founded to provide a clear, intentional pathway for junior golfers seeking long-term development — both on and off the course. Located in the Pinehurst area, CJDI is built on the belief that meaningful progress comes from structure, accountability, and coaching environments that prioritize growth over short-term results.

CJDI blends technical instruction, performance training, and character development to prepare athletes for the demands of competitive golf and life beyond the game. Programs are intentionally selective, ensuring each athlete is placed in an environment aligned with their ability, maturity, and goals.

At CJDI, development is measured not only by scores, but by preparation, discipline, and consistency.

Our Approach to Development

  • Long-term athlete development over short-term outcomes

  • Individualized coaching within a structured system

  • Emphasis on fundamentals, accountability, and progression

  • A holistic view of performance — technical, physical, mental, and competitive

Leadership

Doug Wherry – Founder & Director of Coaching

Doug Wherry is a nationally respected junior golf coach with more than three decades of experience developing elite junior players, coaches, and long-term programs.

In 1992, Doug founded Elite Golf Schools, which became one of the most influential junior development and mentoring programs in the country. Under his leadership, the program produced collegiate golfers, professional players, and nationally recognized coaches — including Riley Andrews, one of Doug’s earliest students, who now leads Elite Golf Schools in Arizona and Colorado.

That same year, Doug was personally hired by Arnold Palmer to design and lead Palmer’s first junior mentoring program in Florida — an experience that helped shape Doug’s philosophy on coaching, leadership, and character development through the game of golf.

Doug’s coaching philosophy centers on building complete players. He believes true development requires more than technical instruction — it demands accountability, mentorship, and an environment that challenges athletes to grow both competitively and personally.

At the Carolina Junior Development Institute, Doug leads the program with a focus on long-term development, ensuring every athlete is prepared not just to compete, but to succeed at the next level.
